The history of Simplex wall clocks.

The Simplex Company, which was one of the largest manufacturers of Simplex wall clocks, was founded by Edward G. Watkins in 1888. 70 years later, Simplex acquired the International Business Machines Corporation’s (IBM) Time Equipment Division. In the early days of the wall clock, Simplex wall clocks were widely used in public buildings, business offices and schools throughout the 19th-20th centuries. Many remain in operation in schools today.

What’s different about Simplex clocks?

What sets a Simplex clock apart from a traditional wall clock is its mechanical makeup. Simplex clocks, otherwise known as secondary clocks, are coordinated with a master clock that keeps time for all of the Simplex clocks that are on its system. The master clock sends a signal, telling the other clocks to advance simultaneously so they remain synchronized. The development of a synchronized time system was monumental for timekeeping around the world.
